Haiku is one of the many types of poetry in Japan. It was founded by Masaoka Shiki in the Meiji period (1868-1912). Haiku is also known as hokku or haiki. Haiku is a poem that follows a 5, 7, 5 syllabus arrangement in three verses.
Haiku poems consist of short verses and kigo. Kigo are words that describe what season the poem is set in. Kigo may or may not be clearly mentioned in the haiku poem.
Haiku poems are very short poems that can convey deep message that the poet wants the reader to receive after reading his or her poems. Since the verses are short it makes it more impactful. Since haiku is a simple poem with deep meaning, soon its popularity began to spread beyond its borders. For example, haiku poems is now modernized. There are also English haiku poems. One of such was published by a Japanese poet called Sadakichi Hartmann.
