France has played an important role in the United Nations (UN). Being a founding member of the United Nations, France is the fifth leading contributor to the UN (regular budget, peacekeeping operations, and international tribunals). It contributed 78 million euros, 320 million euros and 14 million euros for the Regular Budget, Peacekeeping Budget and International Criminal Tribunals Budgets respectively. Without its financial support, some of the UN operations may not be carried out in the first place.
To begin, France has taken part in many activities in the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a specialized agency in the UN. An example will be the International Decade for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. It is involved in promoting the respect of human rights, in ensuring the equality between women and men, etc.The UNESCO’s headquarters is situated in France, Paris to be exact. Its purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and the human rights and fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the UN Charter.
Also, France is also part of the Environment Conservation Organization. It helps to raise environmental awareness, understanding, and knowledge in young people, along with promoting conservation and personal development through projects and activities. Recently, France joins the Billion Tree Campaign launched by the United Nations Environment Programme to raise awareness between humankind and the planet’s ecosystem; and to help mitigate climate change and catalyze environmental action around the world. To date, 5.5 million tree planting pledges have been recorded in France.
Lastly, France is also involved in resolving conflicts in other countries. For example, members of the Security Council meet up to discuss issues about the egregious conflict in Sri Lanka. They went to those countries to have a meeting with the authorities to discuss how the situation can be improved. Other countries include Pakistan and Afghanistan.
