UBS, together with Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport, launch new network for young women leaders

Singapore (31st July 2008) – UBS, together with Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport, today launched a new initiative which aims to provide mentorship, enrichment, networking and community opportunities to undergraduate women leaders from various tertiary institutions in Singapore. Called the Young Women’s Leadership Connection, it was started to help create a pipeline of women leaders in Singapore, preparing them to lead and serve the community.

“Creating a pipeline of women leaders has been an objective close to my heart for a while. I am delighted to involve UBS AG in this initiative, with the firm’s strong focus on talent development and diversity,” said Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport.

“As Singapore moves towards being a more progressive and inclusive society, I see the role, value and contributions of women leaders increasingly important; not only crucial in representing the changing profile and needs of the female population in Singapore but also to help talented women leaders realize their full potential. I believe the Young Women’s Leadership Connection will be an excellent platform to help prepare a pipeline and for the networking of women leaders in Singapore,” she added.

With the rapidly changing economy and increasing globalization, greater opportunities have been opened for women. Women's management styles and communications skills are increasingly recognized as critical and relevant to enhancing an organization's productivity and competitiveness.

Said Gerald Chan, Country Head & CEO, UBS Singapore:” At UBS, more women are occupying some of the most senior management positions in Singapore and across the region. We believe that it is important to embrace diversity in its many forms within a working environment that is open and inclusive. Complementary perspectives can contribute to the creativity that is so needed for any organization to succeed. We are honored to be part of the Young Women’s Leadership Connection in helping to increase the pool of women leaders in Singapore. We are confident that the initiative will provide the young leaders with the necessary mentoring and experiences crucial for leadership.”

Young women leaders from various tertiary institutions will participate in a series of mentoring sessions with senior women leaders across industries, as well as enrichment, community and networking sessions, which will help hone their capabilities and develop qualities of leadership. The programs will comprise seminars, workshops and forums on leadership, networking sessions with women business and political leaders, and provide a platform for the exchange of ideas amongst current and potential leaders. The young women were selected based on academic performance and leadership qualities in extracurricular activities.

Participating at the initial launch event will be young women leaders from the Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University. This will be followed by separate sessions for the other tertiary institutions in Singapore.
